Why Do You Need a Personal Brand?
And how it can help you in your career
When thinking about brands, what always comes to mind are big brands like Nike, Apple or Samsung. The idea of “personal branding” is uncommon to most people.
What is a personal brand exactly?
A personal brand is just about creating a brand around yourself. It’s where your potential clients or employers would land if they look for your name on Google.
If you do a quick search on Google for any celebrity, you will see that most of them have their own personal brand. Try searching for business people like Gary Vaynerchuk, Graham Stephan or Ryan Serhant. Or sport stars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Serena Williams, Andy Murray or Usain Bolt. What do they have in common? They all have their own personal brand.
Why do I need one?
You may be thinking, why do I need a personal brand if I’m not famous?
Well, these are some reasons why you should consider having your own personal brand:
- You want your own website to appear first when someone search your name on Google. Because companies, recruiters and clients usually do this.
- Having your own custom email, for example mine is sergio@sergioguardiola.net. It looks more professional than having a gmail or hotmail e-mail address.
- Whether you are an employee or a freelancer, it can help you to stand out. Consider it as a better version of a CV/resume. Employers and clients can see right away who you are, what you do and examples of your work. You don’t need to overcomplicate it, a one page website should be enough. - It helps you organise all the work you do apart of your job and add it under the umbrella of your own brand. This way, when a user lands on your page, he/she can see all that you do.
Let’s say you are a web developer and you like writing articles in Medium on your spare time. More people will find your Medium account through your website and you’ll gain more followers. - You can offer freelance services or sell products like ebooks or books. This will bring you additional revenue and position yourself as an authority in your field.
How do I get started?
It’s now easier than ever to create your own website. You don’t even have to have technical skills. There are three ways to get started:
- If you don’t know how to code, you can use something like Wix or Webnode. These are very easy to use tools to create your website without having to write a line of code, but you will have to pay a low monthly fee.
- If you have a bit of web development knowledge or you are willing to put in the effort to learn the basics, you can do it yourself and save some money.
All you need is a hosting (I use Hostgator for my websites, but you can use any that you like), some basic knowledge about Wordpress and a drag and drop plugin like Beaver Builder, WP Page Builder or Avada.
