More Than 3 Years Working From Home
What I like and dislike about my new reality
2 min readOct 1, 2023
I started my career in 2010 and I worked in an office for nearly 10 years. But then in 2020 something we all know happened and since then I haven’t been back to an office. I also relocated from the UK to the south of Spain where I’m originally from.
These are my pros and cons of working from home:
Pros
- I don’t have to commute 2 hours or more each day and arrive tired (and sweating in summer) to the office.
- I’m a lot more productive since there aren’t distractions like in an office: pause for coffee, people interrupting while you are trying to think of a solution for a complex issue, long lunches, etc, just to mention a few.
- I have more flexibility. I can leave in the middle of the day if I have doctor’s appointment, need to take the car to the garage or anything else. I just make up that time later, something that in an office sometimes is not even possible.
- I save more as I don’t have to pay for transport, lunch outside, beers etc.
- I can cook and eat healthy food at home, instead of buying processed foods in the supermarket.
Cons
- Sometimes the line between work and life becomes blurry and you end up doing extra time.
- It’s easy to isolate yourself from the outside world, so it’s important to go out, meet family and friends etc.
- All your professional connections happen online (primarily LinkedIn), especially if you don’t live in a big city. It’s important sometimes to go to company events, fairs, events related to your field etc.
- If you are a contractor or freelancer, most if not all interviews will be conducted online, so you have to put extra effort to try to get the job.
So those are my pros and cons so far about working from home. Are you working from home as well? What do you like the most and the least?
